Uden Cup update

Saturday 9th June was the perfect day weather wise to play golf.

Clear Blue sky , no wind and high temperatures.

The Uden Cup Team played their Quarter Final Match against Corrstown Golf Club.

As the away team we had to do it the hard way with three matches away and two at home.

Two great wins at home was followed by the news that we had won a match at Corrstown and were through to the Semi Finals

Again both Willie and I would like to thank our panel of players who continue to play and make themselves available for practice sessions.

Thanks also go to Captain Dominic , Vice Captain Tom and President Celly who supported us on the day and followed the matches around both courses.

The Semi Final takes place before end July and again we will be the away team and will meet the winner of Clontarf and Howth Golf Clubs.

Barton Cup Run Ends

Skerries run in this years Barton Cup came to an end on Saturday when a strong Headfort team won 3 ½ to 1 ½.

Having beaten local rivals Balbriggan in the opening round then Ashbourne in round 2 it was third time unlucky for Skerries. Headfort had recently contested the final of the Barton Cup and it showed as they managed to win a vital away point in Skerries having won their two home matches.

But it was a close affair -Mark Donoghue and George Leech went 5 down early in their away match but staged a marvellous recovery to get back to 1 down only to suffer the agony of defeat on the 18th green.

Co-Manager Paul Branagan, hero with Barry Sherwin of the Ashbourne win, suffered his first defeat away from home. Frank and Jason Rogan played extremely well and won their match – conceded on 17.

There was heartbreak for Junior Captain Ethan McGarry and Ciaran Barker – who both played brilliantly in this years run and were unbeaten in the first 2 rounds – when lady luck deserted them. They even had to witness a pushed shot from their opponents on 10 ricochet off the tress on the right of the green on 10 only to land 2 feet from the pin!

Fergus Gannon and Keith Hickey battled to a hard fought conceded half on 17th when the match was called in.

A learning for next year for sure and many thinks to the Captain and overall team Manager Paul O’Neil for their support and encouragement.

Next stop the Jimmy Bruen on 16th June in Roganstown.

Uden Cup Result

Skerries Uden Cup team played their first match on Saturday 19th May against Donabate Golf Club.

With two matches at Home and three matches Away the team performed excellent winning all three matches in Donabate GC and looked like the winners of the match going down the 19th in Skerries when they were called in.

I would like to thank all the members of the panel who have taken the time to attend the driving range over 6 weeks in February and March and the practice sessions in Donabate and Skerries.

The next opponents ( still to be actually confirmed ) is Corrstown again with three matches away and two at home.

First 9 Hole Qualifying Competition – Wednesday 16th May from 5pm

The GUI has requested that all clubs consider having 9 holes Qualifying Competitions. These competitions were introduced by CONGU to enable players who do not have the time or who are unable to complete 18 Holes, to maintain a handicap which reflects their current playing ability.

9 Hole qualifying competitions are open to all players, but should not be a substitute for 18 Hole qualifying competitions.

The basis of these competitions is that an SSS is applied for the 9 Hole played and 18 stableford points are added for the 9 Holes not played.  However, such 9 Hole Qualifying competitions cannot be facilitated at the same time as an 18 Hole competition.

With this in mind we are running our first 9 hole qualifying competition on Wednesday 16th May from 17:00 to 19:00hrs and the sheet is now open.

NB: A player cannot return two qualifying scores on same day.
